What is the Reef HQ volunteer program?

Reef HQ volunteers donate their time and considerable talents to help Reef HQ expand and improve services to visitors and the local community.

The volunteer program enables the local community to become more involved with the Great Barrier Reef, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. There are 2 main programs for volunteers.

The Volunteer Program caters for adults 18 years and over, and the Student Volunteer Program, specifically designed for high school students to join the program in year 10.

What does a Reef HQ volunteer do?

Depending on your time, talents and interests, you can help with a range of Reef HQ activities, including: guiding tours, staffing the information desk, assisting with school and members’ programs, helping behind the scenes in administration, marketing and promotions, graphic design and some curatorial operations.

What does Reef HQ do for volunteers?

Volunteering for Reef HQ is as rewarding as you want to make it. You will improve your communication skills, learn more about the Great Barrier Reef by attending seminars and talks, receive a monthly newsletter, participate in field trips and social activities, and become part of an exciting group of dedicated Reef HQ supporters. Some Reef HQ volunteers have been with us since Reef HQ opened in 1987.

What skills do I need?

No specific qualifications are required, just a firm commitment to the volunteer program and its goals. Applicants must be 18 or over. There is a special Student Volunteer Program, which is specifically designed for high school students in Year 10.

How do I become a volunteer?

Reef HQ accepts a limited number of volunteers each year, but many more people wish to become volunteers. An open night is held at the end of February/beginning of March each year to explain the program to those interested. Applications are then lodged and potential volunteers interviewed to match their interests and skills with positions available.

Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to:· undertake training, which includes a 6-week part-time training course in March/April (a $50 charge applies);· a minimum of 4 hours per fortnight for a period of 12 months; and· the goal of the volunteer program and the policies of Reef HQ.
