Student Volunteer Program

Student Volunteers

What is the Reef HQ student volunteer program?

Student volunteers donate their time and talents to help Reef HQ expand and improve services to visitors and the local community.

The Student Volunteer Program enables high school students to become more involved with Reef HQ, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Hands on experiences

Student volunteers are involved in a range of activities including staffing the information desk, face to face interpretation, conducting talks and tours, running children’s craft activities, helping with school holiday programs and sleepovers, and participating in community events and promotions.

What does Reef HQ do for student volunteers?

Volunteering for Reef HQ is as rewarding as you want to make it. You will improve your communication and customer service skills, learn more about the Great Barrier Reef and receive a monthly newsletter. You will also make new friends and be able to participate in field trips and excursions.

What skills do I need?

Applicants must be in year 10 and be able to make a commitment to Reef HQ for a period of at least 12 months. No other special qualifications are required, just a firm commitment to the goals of the Student Volunteer Program and the policies of Reef HQ. At the end of the 12 months, you are welcome to continue volunteering.

How do I become a student volunteer?

To ensure that Reef HQ can provide high quality training to its student volunteers, it limits the number of students that it accepts each year.

An open day is held each year to explain the Program to those interested. Applications are then lodged and potential volunteers interviewed to match their interests and skills with the positions available.

Student Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to:

  • undertake a 3-day training course during the School Holidays (a $50 charge applies);
  • participate in specialised training as required;
  • a minimum of 2 hours per fortnight for a period of 12 months; and
  • the goal of the student volunteer program and the policies of Reef HQ.

To register your interest in the Reef HQ Student Volunteer Program, please complete the expression of interest form.
