Reef HQ, formerly known as the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium, was opened on 24 June 1987 and is the world's largest living coral reef aquarium. Its innovative exhibits provide a real life encounter of the Great Barrier Reef. The main attraction is a two and a half million litre coral reef exhibit that replicates a natural reef ecosystem. As the Reef Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Reef HQ is known as a centre of excellence in marine education. Reef HQ exists to inspire everyone to care for the Great Barrier Reef. It is operated on a cost-recovery basis and relies heavily on sponsorship and donations for its commercial viability.
