Nowadays it is considered one of the most widespread pollution problems facing marine environments. In the Great Barrier Reef, scientists have been collecting, identifying and quantifying the amount of marine debris, especially plastic, in the ocean, sand and marine organisms to try and understand how widespread the problem is and what the long-term consequences will be.
