Reef HQ Aquarium volunteers donate their time to assist Reef HQ Aquarium expand and improve services to visitors and the local community. This is provided by supporting and assisting in a range of Reef HQ Aquarium's activities and special programs. The volunteer program enables the local community to become more involved with Reef HQ Aquarium, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

For those interested in volunteering we hold an open night each year in early February, to explain the program to interested people and to allow them to register an interest through application.

What is a volunteer’s role?

Most of our volunteer positions are in the Interpretation Team. This involves talking and assisting our visitors to Reef HQ Aquarium about the marine life on display and providing them with information regarding the Great Barrier Reef. Interpretive volunteers also help with general visitor information and some also do talks and tours although this is optional. Volunteer shifts are usually on a weekly or fortnightly basis for approximately four hours per shift.

Currently, all available positions are within the interpretation team and there are only a limited number of volunteer positions available. Of the positions available the majority are for weekends, however, there are a few available time slots in the week.

There are unfortunately no positions available in the administration, exhibits or curatorial sections currently. Similarly there are no opportunities to volunteer in the turtle hospital or opportunities to dive in our tanks.

What skills do I need?

No specific qualifications are required but applicants must be at least 18 years old. Applicants must have, or be willing to obtain, a blue card (suitability card) for working with children. Blue card applications can be made through the Reef HQ Volunteers Association upon being accepted into the volunteer training course.

How do I become a volunteer?

Reef HQ Aquarium accepts a limited number of volunteers each year.  An open night is held in early February to explain the program to those interested and to allow them to lodge an application. After applications are received potential volunteers are interviewed to match their interests and skills with the positions available.

Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to:

  • Support the objectives of the volunteer program and the policies of Reef HQ Aquarium.
  • Undertake a nine week part-time training course, offered on Wednesday evenings and some weekends, in March, April and May. Please note, a $65 fee applies.
  • Contribute four hours per week, or fortnight, for 12 months.
  • Contribute at least 50 hours of volunteering with Reef HQ Aquarium.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Reef HQ Aquarium please come along to the 'Volunteer Open Night'. The next intake evening will be held in 2020 and dates will be announced in January of that year. There is no need to register for the evening.

Entry is via the Reef HQ Aquarium Night Entrance in Kelleher Place.
