Volunteer

Reef HQ volunteers donate their time to assist Reef HQ Aquarium to provide services to visitors and the local community. All volunteers belong to Reef HQ Volunteers Association Incorporated. The Volunteer Association's goal is to facilitate community involvement in Reef HQ Aquarium activities designed to inform and educate the general public about the Great Barrier Reef and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The mission of Reef HQ Volunteer's Association is to "Inspire all to care about the Great Barrier Reef."

What is a volunteer’s role?

Most volunteers work within the public galleries of Reef HQ Aquarium where they talk to our visitors about the marine life on display and provide them with information regarding the Great Barrier Reef. Some volunteers do talks and tours. Volunteer shifts are usually on a weekly or fortnightly basis for approximately four hours per shift.

Some volunteers help with the administration of the volunteer program or on the Volunteer Management Committee.

There are no opportunities for volunteers to help behind the scenes in exhibits, in the Turtle Hospital or curatorial or animal husbandry operations. Similarly there are no opportunities for volunteer divers in our tanks.

What skills do I need to become a volunteer?

No specific qualifications are required but applicants must be at least 18 years old. Applicants must have, or be willing to obtain, a blue card (suitability card) for working with children. Blue card applications can be made through the Reef HQ Volunteers Association upon being accepted into the volunteer training course.

How do I become a volunteer?

Reef HQ Volunteers Association usually host an information night once a year to explain the program to those interested and to allow them to lodge an application. After applications are received potential volunteers are interviewed to match their interests and skills with the positions available.

When is the next intake of volunteers?

Currently all volunteer positions are full. We won't be having a Volunteer Open night or intake in 2020.
