See + Do

There’s always something to See + Do at Reef HQ Aquarium. As the National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) you will be able to enjoy a variety of exhibits and activities suitable for all ages.

See the Great Barrier Reef as you’ve never seen it before with our incredible reef tanks containing a wide variety of corals and marine creatures.

Get closer to the action with our ‘windows’ on the reef and experience life under the waves with a walk in our incredible ‘reef tunnel’.

Reef HQ is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium and with over 300+ species available there’s always something new to see.

While talks and tours are temporarily suspended, we have roving Reef Education Specialists who can answer your questions about the Great Barrier Reef. Videos are available in the theatre and QR codes are available at certain exhibits, which link to additional content about the marine life.

Daily Talks and Tours (temporarily suspended)

10:30am - The Predator Dive Show

Talk to a diver underwater as they share the underwater world with sharks and other reef predators in our amazing reef wreck tank.

11.15am & 2.00pm - Discovery Lagoon Session

A supervised hands-on encounter with some of the marine creatures commonly found while reef walking. This one is a true favourite with everyone, especially children, so make sure you give yourselves plenty of time.

12.00pm & 3.30pm - Turtle Talk

See how we care for sick and injured turtles in our Turtle Hospital. We’ll explain how we go about treating these gentle giants of the reef and let you know about our recent successes.

2.30pm - Shark Feeding Show (Tue, Thur and Sun)

There’s nothing like the experience of seeing the fish at feeding time when you’re almost in the action. We feed our predators whilst you watch in complete safety inside our ‘reef tunnel’. This is certainly an event you will not want to miss! But, don’t worry, it’s not like Jaws.

2.30pm - Animal Feeding Tour (Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat)

There’s nothing like feeding time for our reef fish. They love their food and you’ll love the display of colours sizes and species as they try and outdo each other for the tastiest pieces. Watch some of the fastest fish you’ve ever seen and look for the crafty ones that use stealth rather than speed. Every one of all ages will enjoy this spectacle so make sure you don’t miss out.

Coral Reef Exhibit (2.5 million litres)

One of the largest marine tanks of its type with 150+ species of fish and over 120+ species of hard and soft corals exclusive to the Great Barrier Reef. This is a unique encounter in many ways not only from its size, but, also because it’s open to the elements providing the most natural experience for the marine creatures who inhabit this space. But don’t worry, you can experience this phenomenal exhibit in complete comfort from inside the Reef HQ Aquarium building.
